Protecting Your Pipes from Bursting

As winter approaches, it's crucial to safeguard your home against the harsh cold and potential pipe damage. Here’s how to prevent your pipes from freezing and what steps to take if they unfortunately burst. Trust Sanders’ decades of experience to guide you through these winter challenges.

Winterizing Your Pipes

Winterizing your plumbing system is the first step in preventing frozen pipes. Follow these tips to keep your pipes safe during the chilly months:

1. Insulate Your Pipes: If you discover a specific section of the pipe that is prone to freezing, consider adding additional insulation to that area. Ensure that pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, and crawl spaces are properly insulated. This simple step can go a long way in preventing freezing. We’ve seen several hacks to this, too. Like slicing open a pool noodle and sliding it over your pipes.

2. Seal Leaks and Cracks: Identify and seal any gaps or cracks in your home's foundation and walls. This will prevent cold air from reaching your pipes. Don’t forget to close those crawl space vents, too. This helps keep some of that dry, cold air from getting into your crawl space.

3. Keep a Consistent Temperature: Maintain a consistent temperature inside your home, even when you're away. Set your thermostat to at least 55°F to prevent pipes from freezing. And, it even sometimes helps to keep the cabinets open to your plumbing so your home’s heating and cooling can reach them better.

4. Let Your Faucets Drip: One of the oldest tips around is to let some of your water drip from the faucets. While this doesn't always prevent freezing, it’s better to have some water moving through your pipes so that ice is less likely to form.

What to Do When Pipes Freeze

Despite your best efforts, pipes can still freeze. If you suspect frozen pipes, take immediate action with these steps:

1. Apply Heat: Use a hairdryer, heating pad, or hot towels to thaw frozen pipes. Start from the faucet end and work your way towards the frozen section.

2. Turn Off Water Supply: Locate your main water shut-off valve and turn it off immediately to prevent further water damage.

3. Drain Faucets: Open all faucets to drain any remaining water in the plumbing system.
